Character Name: Henry Oak
Age: early 60s (though he looks like he's in his 40s)
Canon: Dungeons and Daddies
Canon Point: in between Season 1 and Season 2, several years after Sparrow implements Code Purple
Character History: Wiki link.
Before getting into Henry's history, we need to mention that of his father.
Henry's father was a powerful druid from the Forgotten Realms named Barry Oak. Barry's mother, Hildy Russett, was brought into the Forgotten Realms from Earth by an eldritch being known as the Doodler that represents randomness & chaos. As her son, Barry bears a fragment of the Doodler's power. Barry believed that this made him better than his peers, and styled himself into the leader of a
Though Henry also has the same power of the Doodler inside him as his father had inherited, he cannot access it consciously. When Henry was a young man, he inadvertently used the Doodler's power within him to transport himself from the Forgotten Realms to Earth through a shard of a magic mirror. The experience was so traumatic that it gave Henry amnesia, and he forgot all about his life before arriving on Earth. He was found by a hiker named Mercedes Garcia, and the two would eventually wed and start a family.
Mercedes gave birth to twins whom they named Lark and Sparrow; the Doodler's power passed on from Henry to his sons, growing even stronger. By the time Henry's sons were twelve, Henry was working as a geologist at the San Dimas Museum of Natural History, living a pleasant life as a normal, run-of-the-mill human on Earth.
One day, while carpooling with some other dads and kids from Lark and Sparrow's soccer team, their minivan drove through a portal and wound up in the Forgotten Realms. Their group had passed out from the incident, and when the dads awoke, their sons were gone. They set out on an epic journey to recover their lost sons, during which Henry regained his lost memories and confronted his father.
Early on in their journey, the dads learned of a prophecy that foretold the coming of the Doodler, "when the blood of the Unsung Hero is spilled." They only knew of the Doodler as the mascot of their sons' soccer team, which Sparrow had drawn. It was eventually revealed that Barry Oak had partnered with two of the other dads' fathers, Bill Close and Willie Stampler, to kidnap their grandsons and attempt to use them to increase their Daddy Magic and become immortal. Henry and his friends took to calling their dads "the Omega Daddies."
About several weeks or months later, after the sons had been rescued, the Omega Daddies had been defeated, and everyone had made it back home to Earth, the group all gathered at the Oak-Garcia household for a movie night. Sparrow and Lark came to Henry in the kitchen, and Sparrow told Henry that Lark wanted to apologize and bury the hatchet of a grudge he had been holding against Henry. Feeling happy, Henry hugged his son, at which point Lark slipped a knife into Henry's shoulder, revealing that Willie Stampler had told him that Henry was the unsung hero, and by spilling his blood, they would bring the Doodler into the world.
With the Doodler loose in the world, the dads and their sons founded D.A.D.D.I.E.S.: The Department for the Acquisition, Destruction, Deployment and Investigation of Extra-Normal Stuff, an organization dedicated to protecting the world from the "Doodlerized" monstrosities which had spread like wildfire. Their sons also joined D.A.D.D.I.E.S. as they grew older. Unbeknownst to Henry, his son Sparrow came up with a plan to save Earth, codenamed Code Purple: using magical items, Sparrow planned to swap the entire population of Earth with the entire population of the Forgotten Realms, thereby saving Earth/humanity in exchange for dooming another world in its stead. He also planned on erasing the memories of everyone on Earth so that they would forget that their world was ever any different.
Henry, upon learning about Sparrow's plan, forbade it. He locked away the magic items Sparrow would need to implement Code Purple in a safe in his D.A.D.D.I.E.S. headquarters office. It wasn't until Sparrow's young son, Normal Oak-Swallows-Garcia accidentally let an eldritch flesh monster loose in the HQ that Sparrow finally forced his way into Henry's office and stole the items his plan needed. This led to the largest falling out in Oak family history, wherein Henry told Sparrow that he loved him, but he would never forgive him for what he did.
In the years after Code Purple, Henry separated himself from his family. He retreated onto the Doodlerized Earth, living in a small hut in a commune full of scared Forgotten Realms citizens, including his own elderly, now-senile and bitter father, Barry Oak.
At his current canon point, Mercedes has passed away, leaving Henry to live in solitary penance for the actions of his sons.
Canon Abilities:
- Druidic Magic — Henry can cast a wide variety of magic spells for healing, defense, or offense. He can teleport himself and others, and transform into any animal he's seen before. (He mostly sticks to the animals from the San Diego Zoo.) Additionally, because Henry is such a high level druid, he ages more slowly than a normal human.
- Daddy Magic — Through the power of his strong bond with his sons, Henry can cast the powerful spell Animal Shapes, which allows him to transform groups of willing people into animals.
- Elven Blood — Henry's elven lineage from his paternal grandfather gives him certain abilities: he can see in the dark up to sixty feet, he is more able to prevent himself from becoming charmed, and he cannot be put to sleep by magic.
- Mundane Skills — Henry's nonmagical abilities include:
- identifying rocks/general geology knowledge
- freestyle rap
- basic first aid
- vegan cooking
- lip reading
- beginner-level salsa dancing
- semifluency in Spanish
- identifying rocks/general geology knowledge
Inventory: Just his clothing, which includes: Birkenstocks, socks, hiking pants with the legs zipped off into shorts, a t-shirt purchased from a national park gift shop in 1994, and his glasses.
🦋 Personality
Option 2: You may instead choose words from the following list to expand upon as your personality section. Elaborate on what this word means to your character, specifically their thoughts about it. For Canon Characters, you can choose five words. For Original Characters, you will need to choose seven words. Keep the word count to 100-300 per choice.
- Green
Henry’s first association with the word “green” would be nature! He’s a loyal Green Party voter, a lifelong vegan, and he even once upon a time joined up with an environmental activism group that actually turned out to be ecoterrorists. “Being green,” “going green,” and “thinking/doing green” infuses every aspect of Henry’s life. The majority of his decision-making is centered around the choices he can make to better the environment. Just… don’t bring up the ethical implications of all the unpaid or low-wage labor that goes into harvesting the vegan food that Henry eats. He’d rather not tackle that moral quandary right now, thanks.
- Needle
At this point in Henry’s life, the biggest association with the word “needle” would be the magical memory syringes used by D.A.D.D.I.E.S. These magical syringes are capable of removing memories from a human being when inserted into the back of the neck. Their magic was instrumental in Sparrow’s implementation of Code Purple, as it allowed the entire population of Earth to forget the fact that they had just swapped realities with the Forgotten Realms, and forget that their world was ever under threat from the Doodler.
Moreover, Henry harbors an unbearable amount of resentment and shame towards his son for Sparrow’s actions. He so cannot move on from what he sees as the greatest mistake that D.A.D.D.I.E.S. has ever made, and he has dedicated himself to living on the Earth-that-was, among the very people who Sparrow doomed to a Doodlerified lifestyle. Not only can he not forgive Sparrow, but he also can’t forgive himself, for somehow being the kind of father that would lead Sparrow to make such a drastic decision. Even though Code Purple happened against Henry's will, there’s a part of Henry that takes on the blame anyway. - Child
”Child” is an incredibly important word for Henry, because being a father is such an integral part of how he defines his own identity. Not only that, but so much of who Henry is and how he thinks of himself is defined by his identity as the child of his own father. He has dedicated his life to raising his sons as contrary as possible to the way he himself was raised. In many ways, his attempts at overcorrecting to avoid becoming the same overbearing, controlling father that Barry was has only led him to make more mistakes in the raising of Lark and Sparrow. In his attempts to show his sons leniency and love without instilling obedience or accountability in return, Henry ended up making Lark resent him, and Sparrow betray him.
When reflecting on the word “child,” Henry would feel nostalgic for when his sons were still children, before grudges, resentment, and betrayal entered their way into their lives and caused friction within the Oak household. Even though Lark and Sparrow were supremely chaotic children, to Henry they were still innocent and beautiful, and he would have moved Heaven and Earth to keep them that way, if he could have. - Cow
When Henry and his fellow dads were trapped in the Forgotten Realms, they were prevented from returning home because the Omega Daddies used Daddy Magic to create anchors that tied each of them to the realm. The dads had to conduct a Daddy Magic ritual to locate their anchors, so that they could break each one and ultimately return home to Earth. For this crucial Daddy Magic ritual, they summoned, trapped, killed, and ate the dread cow Vacarys, a huge quasi-demon cow three times the size of a regular cow, and roasted him in the most epic barbeque known to man.
Henry, being a staunch lifelong vegan, objected to this plan of action, but even he couldn’t deny the potency of the Daddy Magic. Vacarys, upon being summoned, retaliated by Mind Blasting the group of gathered dads, stunning everyone except Henry. Henry then took the opportunity to give a one minute long lecture on the merits of veganism while he had the captive audience of the stunned dads.
So, when Henry thinks of the word “cow,” his mind would immediately go back to the ritual of summoning and killing Vacarys, and he would reflect on how even though he had to eat meat this one time, it was a sacrifice for a greater good: getting himself and his kids back home. - Door
Henry spent a good chunk of his adult life with the memories of his childhood locked behind a metaphorical “door” in his mind. It was his mind’s way of coping with the intense trauma of being physically yanked through an unstable dimensional portal that brought him from the Forgotten Realms to Earth. Only when he returned to Oakvale in search of his anchor did Henry confront this trauma, which held the key to unlocking his memories.
Upon hearing the word “door,” Henry would think back to the period of his life when he didn’t remember who he was and had to forge a new life for himself while knowing nothing but his own name. He would think about the way Mercedes and her family helped him by taking him in and teaching him about their world. He would think about the family he and Mercedes built together, and how he cared deeply about saving that family once the “door” inside his mind was opened. Henry doesn’t like to live life with regrets, and as traumatic as his amnesia was, he doesn't resent the loss of memory as much as someone might think he would. Living so many years with his memories locked away turned him into the man he is today.

Canon/CRAU Timeline
FAERUN, ????
Henry grew up as Prince Hen Ry'Oak in Oakvale, a druidic hippie commune run by his father, Bear Ry'Oak (aka Barry Oak). No matter what Hen did, he could never live up to his father's expectations.
Unbeknownst to Hen, his bloodline contained a powerful chaos entity from beyond all known realms, passed down from his grandmother, to his father, to him. This being is known as the Doodler.
Bear's life's work centered around trying to create a magic looking glass which would allow him to open a portal to Earth, the otherworldly realm where his mother, Hildy Russet, came from. However, Bear could never get the looking glass to work, and he shattered it in a rare moment of rage.
Prince Hen, desperate for his father's approval, took it upon himself to repair the looking glass and finish what his father started.
EARTH, 2002
Somehow, Hen managed it! Except the magic of the looking glass was uncontrolled, and it opened a portal to Earth which sucked Hen through it before he could stop it, and spat him out in the middle of an Ecuadorian rainforest. The process was so traumatizing that it burned away all his clothes and left Hen with amnesia, able to remember nothing but his name.
Hen wandered the rainforest for days, naked, hungry, and alone, until a hiker found him— Mercedes Garcia.
Shortly after their meeting, Henry passed out from dehydration. Mercedes brought him to a hospital, and stayed by his bedside for weeks until he woke up. When it became clear that Henry had no memory of who he was or where he was from, Mercedes brought him back to California with her, where her family took him in. The two would later marry.

FOLKMORE, June '22-January '23
Henry was brought into Folkmore by Thirteen as a Legend, fresh from being stabbed by Lark, and spent half a year making a new life for himself, living through trials and trying to reach his full potential. He formed a very close connection with a young teen named Sunny, a shut in who also had painful memories locked away in his mind. They bonded over their shared trauma, and Henry slowly encouraged Sunny to come out of his shell.
RYSLIG, September-November '23
Without any memory of his time in Folkmore, Henry was brought to the Ryslig peninsula by the Fog God, once again fresh from being stabbed. Here, he was transformed into an undead, skeletal being known as a lich, who would uncontrollably rot or decay any organic matter he touched.
While in Ryslig, Henry lived through a near-apocalypse, during which the land was torn apart by Old Gods who were angry at what the Fog God and her monsters had done to the world. The only way to stop the apocalypse, after mass starvation and natural disasters, was for as many monsters as possible to kill themselves in a ritual sacrifice. Henry tried to join the sacrifice, however he didn't know that as a a lich, he couldn't actually be killed unless his phylactery was destroyed. So, in the end, his death counted for nothing.
EARTH, 2020-2024
FOLKMORE, January-April '23
Henry returned to Folkmore, four years older. At this point, he remembered his previous stay in Folkmore, but had no memories of his time in Ryslig. This stay only lasted a couple of months before Thirteen once again sent Henry back home.
EARTH, 2024
The dads and the teens fight their way to a place known as the Church of the Doodler, an impossibly high summit, close to the writhing mass of the Doodler in the sky, where a cult of Doodler worshippers commune with the chaos entity through the use of a throne. Despite Henry's every effort to stop him, Lark sits on the throne, feeling guilty for plunging the world into ruin. He is immediately flooded with the overwhelming amount of chaotic, confusing emotions felt by the Doodler: love, hate, fear, loneliness. With tears streaming down his face, Lark declares, "We have to kill it."
FOLKMORE, January 2024-Now
It would seem that Thirteen isn't quite done with Henry yet, as she pulled him back to Folkmore for the third time. This time, he came complete not only with the memories of his previous stay, but also with the memories of his time as a lich in Ryslig. Henry is a more haunted, defeated man than he was previously, but he is trying to return to his old, optimistic self.

Black ichor spilled forth from Henry, Lark, and Sparrow and flooded the sky, covering the world in chaos and uncertainty.Personality:
Henry is a kind soul at heart, and he loves nothing more in life than caring for his family— his loving wife, Mercedes Oak-Garcia, and his beautiful twin boys, Lark and Sparrow. As a young man, Henry accidentally transported himself from his home realm to Earth in a process that was so traumatic that his mind took all memory of his previous life and shut them behind a door in his mind so that they couldn't hurt him. The only thing he remembered was his own name. Mercedes was the person who found him, naked, dehydrated, and delirious, wandering through the rainforest. She showed him kindness, staying with him after he passed out and sitting at his bedside in the hospital while he recovered. She took this scared, broken man to her family home, and taught him how the world works, until he was strong enough to make sense of the large gaps of memory in his mind and forge a new life for himself, at her side. Whereas Henry's parents were cold to him— Barry because of his narcissistic drive for perfection, and Autumn, his mother, because she was too traumatized by Barry's abuse to show Henry any love or kindness— when the Garcia family took Henry in, they taught him how to be kind, how to care for the world he lives in and the people in that world, and how to love with his whole heart. It is thanks to the Garcias that Henry is the loving, generous man that he is today.5-10 Key Character Traits:“Dad, stop. Stop. Dad, stop. Dad, I love you, okay? Despite everything, I love you, and maybe I’m just seeing things a little bit more clearly now, but I think you’re angry for the same reason that I’m angry. Because the thing that’s inside you, that’s inside me, it scares you the way it scares me. And I’m angry because I can’t control it. I don’t think I’m perfect, I don’t think I’m better than everyone, I think I’m fucked up! I think I’m a broken man!”Henry is prone to adopt a 'holier than thou' attitude over many issues, but most of all veganism and environmental awareness. He makes snide remarks about how his Prius is better for the environment than Darryl's gas guzzling Honda Odyssey, and even takes the time to monologue at the rest of the group all the reasons why they should switch to a vegan diet, during a moment when the rest of the dads are passed out and can't stop him. This is a habit he subconsciously picked up from his father, who believed so strongly that he was better than everyone else that he founded a cult and populated it with homunculi clones made in his image. When Henry finally faced his father again for the first time, Barry tried to coach him through a calming yoga routine while talking down to Henry the whole time. Henry, being kind and forgiving, loves his father, but deep down he really loathes his father, and in many ways tries his hardest to be as different from Barry as he can. However, he also falls prey to speaking from a position of authority and trying to enforce his way of life onto others. Henry's bloodline is cursed to play host to an otherworldly chaos being referred to by the dads as "The Doodler," which causes Henry and his kin to have wild tendencies. In Henry's sons, Lark and Sparrow, this manifests in them wanting to fight anyone and everyone to try to prove that they are the strongest. In Henry's father, Barry Oak, it manifested in a controlling nature with barely concealed violent intent underneath it. Henry tries to suppress the fear and anger inside him as hard as he can, giving off an air of controlled calm, but when push comes to shove, he hits his limit and lets go of his rage in an explosive outburst, yelling at and insulting his friends for their frustrating insistence on what Henry sees as the wrong course of action.“Is everybody buckled up?” “Are you boys buckled up back there?” “Boy, oh boy, are we ever!” (If you look, they are super not.) “Uh, hey Henry! I don’t mean to call your kids a liar, but—” “Oh they’ll buckle up once we get started on the road.” “Relationships are built on trust, that’s what you tell me. You should trust that we’re going to buckle up!” “You know, I’m tryna’ let them make their own decisions, it’s called free-range parenting.”Henry's approach to parenting is, as stated previously, specifically chosen to be the polar opposite of how his own father raised him. Whereas Barry tried to exert complete control over every aspect of Henry's life, Henry chooses to employ what he calls "free range parenting," by letting the twins run wild with little or no actual punishment for their misdeeds. He tries to talk them into an understanding of why violence isn't the answer, with mixed results, and ultimately forgives them no matter what they do, going so far as to show Lark unceasing love and forgiveness even after Lark deceived Henry and attacked him, spilling the blood of the Unsung Hero and unleashing the Doodler into the world. Lark's quest for violence and vengeance plunged the world into an apocalypse, but Henry refused to punish him or blame him in any way. Henry loves a good intellectual puzzle, and he finds puns to be the pinnacle of humor. His personal flavor of nerd-dom is geology, which led him to work at the San Dimas Museum of Natural History. He loves geology so much that he convinced his colleagues at the museum to help him record a geology-themed rap EP (the majority of which is written and performed by Henry, with the addition of a rap battle from his coworkers about which classification of rock is the best). Henry's dad jokes are so potent that they can cause psychic damage in anyone who hears them— unless that person is another dad, and therefore immune.“Well, you know what, Darryl? Maybe I am going to stay in ‘cause maybe we need to be held accountable for our own actions, no matter what the consequences, and no matter what the context is. And just because you’ve got other stuff going on doesn't mean that these people don't have a right to their anger at us. And I know it wasn't our fault, but sometimes horrible tragedies happen by accident, and that's just a dark thing you have to live with. Maybe it's important that we take responsibility for our actions. We killed hundreds of people with our actions. We need to respect this town, and we need to come to some kind of resolution here.”Shortly after the dads arrived in the Forgotten Realms and entered the city of Neverwinter, tragedy struck in the form of Darryl tossing a bag of magic beans down an elevator shaft to Henry, to try to help him fight off some attackers. In doing so, four beans spilled out of the bags, most of which had harmless effects (summoning three frogs, a geyser of apple juice, etc.). But the fourth bean summoned something much greater: a huge stone pyramid with a 60' by 60' base. Given that this pyramid appeared in an elevator shaft halfway up a tall tower, it completely crushed everything beneath it, instantly killing or maiming hundreds of people. The dads, knowing that it was an act of random chance but still ostensibly their fault, fled Neverwinter as soon as they could. Later on, their travels took them back to Neverwinter, where they planned to hire an army of mercenaries to storm the castle of Ravenloft and get their sons back from the shadowy evil men who had kidnapped them. Of course, as soon as the Neverwinter city guards saw their minivan, they tried to arrest them right away for their hand in creating the pyramid. Darryl and Glenn tried their best to persuade the guards to let them go, but Henry's innate sense of responsibility and his strict moral code made him insist that they should face the consequences of their actions and turn themselves in. When the dads then decided to take on an unpaid intern, Henry argued they should pay him for his work.“Okay. I'm just not gonna say anything and they should… They better not… If they ask me any question I can't be held responsible for what comes out of my mouth. So I'm just going to try to be quiet.”Henry's desire for moral 'rightness' makes it so that he has an incredibly hard time lying. Even white lies meant to spare someone's feelings or to prevent the dads from getting in even more trouble can cause Henry intense anxiety, until he finally can't take it anymore and blurts out the truth. Early on in the adventure, the dads tried to mediate a family disagreement between a father fairy dragon, Gartok, and his kids, who ran away from him after Gartok tried to use them as slave labor. The dads accidentally removed a magical bracelet from Gartok's ankle, without knowing that by doing so, they had caused the death of Gartok's only son. Later, when the dads approached the two dragon daughters, they tried to lie and say that it was Gartok who was responsible for killing their brother, so that the girls wouldn't attack them in retaliation. Henry tried to stay silent, reasoning that a lie of omission would be easier than an outright lie, but the longer that their confrontation went on, the harder it was for him to keep quiet. Finally, he panicked, and confessed that it was Ron who removed the anklet, and in doing so killed their brother. This (understandably) did not help their negotiation efforts.

Eleanor Shellstrop (The Good Place)
Exactly How I Feel by Lizzo
I might make a friend (Friend)
Ain't I so amazing? (Uh-huh)
Love me or hate me
Who are you changing?
And I don't give a fuck, no
Wei Wuxian (The Untamed)
The Zephyr Song by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Take a piece and pass it on
Fly away on my zephyr
I feel it more than ever
And in this perfect weather
We'll find a place together
Flynn Scifo (Tales of Vesperia)
Morning is Made by Hush Kids
For the birds and the trees
The morning is made
For the falling of leaves
The morning is made to start over again, we do
Everything's waiting for you
Yuri Lowell (Tales of Vesperia)
Talking to Myself by Hush Kids
I swallow words I don't want to waste
You can only say, say the same thing
So many times 'til they lose their meaning
I shout down the hall but nothing comes back
Gideon Nav (The Locked Tomb)
Die Easy by Rag'n'Bone Man
I don't want nobody to mourn
All I want for my friends to do
Is to hold up dying arms
Dr. Stephen Strange (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
Break On Through (To The Other Side) by The Doors
Day to day, hour to hour
Gate is straight, deep and wide
Break on through to the other side
Sunny Suzuki (Omori)
Walking With A Ghost by Tegan and Sara
I said please, please don't insist
No matter which way you go
No matter which way you stay
You're out of my mind, out of my mind
