🦋 IC Information

Character Name: Henry Oak
Age: early 60s (though he looks like he's in his 40s)
Canon: Dungeons and Daddies
Canon Point: in between Season 1 and Season 2, several years after Sparrow implements Code Purple
Character History: Wiki link.

Before getting into Henry's history, we need to mention that of his father.

Henry's father was a powerful druid from the Forgotten Realms named Barry Oak. Barry's mother, Hildy Russett, was brought into the Forgotten Realms from Earth by an eldritch being known as the Doodler that represents randomness & chaos. As her son, Barry bears a fragment of the Doodler's power. Barry believed that this made him better than his peers, and styled himself into the leader of a cult hippie commune in the Forgotten Realms, where, many years later, he and his wife Autumn Oak gave birth to their son, Henry.

Though Henry also has the same power of the Doodler inside him as his father had inherited, he cannot access it consciously. When Henry was a young man, he inadvertently used the Doodler's power within him to transport himself from the Forgotten Realms to Earth through a shard of a magic mirror. The experience was so traumatic that it gave Henry amnesia, and he forgot all about his life before arriving on Earth. He was found by a hiker named Mercedes Garcia, and the two would eventually wed and start a family.

Mercedes gave birth to twins whom they named Lark and Sparrow; the Doodler's power passed on from Henry to his sons, growing even stronger. By the time Henry's sons were twelve, Henry was working as a geologist at the San Dimas Museum of Natural History, living a pleasant life as a normal, run-of-the-mill human on Earth.

One day, while carpooling with some other dads and kids from Lark and Sparrow's soccer team, their minivan drove through a portal and wound up in the Forgotten Realms. Their group had passed out from the incident, and when the dads awoke, their sons were gone. They set out on an epic journey to recover their lost sons, during which Henry regained his lost memories and confronted his father.

Early on in their journey, the dads learned of a prophecy that foretold the coming of the Doodler, "when the blood of the Unsung Hero is spilled." They only knew of the Doodler as the mascot of their sons' soccer team, which Sparrow had drawn. It was eventually revealed that Barry Oak had partnered with two of the other dads' fathers, Bill Close and Willie Stampler, to kidnap their grandsons and attempt to use them to increase their Daddy Magic and become immortal. Henry and his friends took to calling their dads "the Omega Daddies."

About several weeks or months later, after the sons had been rescued, the Omega Daddies had been defeated, and everyone had made it back home to Earth, the group all gathered at the Oak-Garcia household for a movie night. Sparrow and Lark came to Henry in the kitchen, and Sparrow told Henry that Lark wanted to apologize and bury the hatchet of a grudge he had been holding against Henry. Feeling happy, Henry hugged his son, at which point Lark slipped a knife into Henry's shoulder, revealing that Willie Stampler had told him that Henry was the unsung hero, and by spilling his blood, they would bring the Doodler into the world.

With the Doodler loose in the world, the dads and their sons founded D.A.D.D.I.E.S.: The Department for the Acquisition, Destruction, Deployment and Investigation of Extra-Normal Stuff, an organization dedicated to protecting the world from the "Doodlerized" monstrosities which had spread like wildfire. Their sons also joined D.A.D.D.I.E.S. as they grew older. Unbeknownst to Henry, his son Sparrow came up with a plan to save Earth, codenamed Code Purple: using magical items, Sparrow planned to swap the entire population of Earth with the entire population of the Forgotten Realms, thereby saving Earth/humanity in exchange for dooming another world in its stead. He also planned on erasing the memories of everyone on Earth so that they would forget that their world was ever any different.

Henry, upon learning about Sparrow's plan, forbade it. He locked away the magic items Sparrow would need to implement Code Purple in a safe in his D.A.D.D.I.E.S. headquarters office. It wasn't until Sparrow's young son, Normal Oak-Swallows-Garcia accidentally let an eldritch flesh monster loose in the HQ that Sparrow finally forced his way into Henry's office and stole the items his plan needed. This led to the largest falling out in Oak family history, wherein Henry told Sparrow that he loved him, but he would never forgive him for what he did.

In the years after Code Purple, Henry separated himself from his family. He retreated onto the Doodlerized Earth, living in a small hut in a commune full of scared Forgotten Realms citizens, including his own elderly, now-senile and bitter father, Barry Oak.

At his current canon point, Mercedes has passed away, leaving Henry to live in solitary penance for the actions of his sons.

Canon Abilities:
  • Druidic Magic — Henry can cast a wide variety of magic spells for healing, defense, or offense. He can teleport himself and others, and transform into any animal he's seen before. (He mostly sticks to the animals from the San Diego Zoo.) Additionally, because Henry is such a high level druid, he ages more slowly than a normal human.
  • Daddy Magic — Through the power of his strong bond with his sons, Henry can cast the powerful spell Animal Shapes, which allows him to transform groups of willing people into animals.
  • Elven Blood — Henry's elven lineage from his paternal grandfather gives him certain abilities: he can see in the dark up to sixty feet, he is more able to prevent himself from becoming charmed, and he cannot be put to sleep by magic.
  • Mundane Skills — Henry's nonmagical abilities include:
    • identifying rocks/general geology knowledge
    • freestyle rap
    • basic first aid
    • vegan cooking
    • lip reading
    • beginner-level salsa dancing
    • semifluency in Spanish

Inventory: Just his clothing, which includes: Birkenstocks, socks, hiking pants with the legs zipped off into shorts, a t-shirt purchased from a national park gift shop in 1994, and his glasses.

🦋 Personality

Option 2: You may instead choose words from the following list to expand upon as your personality section. Elaborate on what this word means to your character, specifically their thoughts about it. For Canon Characters, you can choose five words. For Original Characters, you will need to choose seven words. Keep the word count to 100-300 per choice.

  • Green
Henry’s first association with the word “green” would be nature! He’s a loyal Green Party voter, a lifelong vegan, and he even once upon a time joined up with an environmental activism group that actually turned out to be ecoterrorists. “Being green,” “going green,” and “thinking/doing green” infuses every aspect of Henry’s life. The majority of his decision-making is centered around the choices he can make to better the environment. Just… don’t bring up the ethical implications of all the unpaid or low-wage labor that goes into harvesting the vegan food that Henry eats. He’d rather not tackle that moral quandary right now, thanks.

  • Needle
At this point in Henry’s life, the biggest association with the word “needle” would be the magical memory syringes used by D.A.D.D.I.E.S. These magical syringes are capable of removing memories from a human being when inserted into the back of the neck. Their magic was instrumental in Sparrow’s implementation of Code Purple, as it allowed the entire population of Earth to forget the fact that they had just swapped realities with the Forgotten Realms, and forget that their world was ever under threat from the Doodler.

Moreover, Henry harbors an unbearable amount of resentment and shame towards his son for Sparrow’s actions. He so cannot move on from what he sees as the greatest mistake that D.A.D.D.I.E.S. has ever made, and he has dedicated himself to living on the Earth-that-was, among the very people who Sparrow doomed to a Doodlerified lifestyle. Not only can he not forgive Sparrow, but he also can’t forgive himself, for somehow being the kind of father that would lead Sparrow to make such a drastic decision. Even though Code Purple happened against Henry's will, there’s a part of Henry that takes on the blame anyway.

  • Child
”Child” is an incredibly important word for Henry, because being a father is such an integral part of how he defines his own identity. Not only that, but so much of who Henry is and how he thinks of himself is defined by his identity as the child of his own father. He has dedicated his life to raising his sons as contrary as possible to the way he himself was raised. In many ways, his attempts at overcorrecting to avoid becoming the same overbearing, controlling father that Barry was has only led him to make more mistakes in the raising of Lark and Sparrow. In his attempts to show his sons leniency and love without instilling obedience or accountability in return, Henry ended up making Lark resent him, and Sparrow betray him.

When reflecting on the word “child,” Henry would feel nostalgic for when his sons were still children, before grudges, resentment, and betrayal entered their way into their lives and caused friction within the Oak household. Even though Lark and Sparrow were supremely chaotic children, to Henry they were still innocent and beautiful, and he would have moved Heaven and Earth to keep them that way, if he could have.

  • Cow
When Henry and his fellow dads were trapped in the Forgotten Realms, they were prevented from returning home because the Omega Daddies used Daddy Magic to create anchors that tied each of them to the realm. The dads had to conduct a Daddy Magic ritual to locate their anchors, so that they could break each one and ultimately return home to Earth. For this crucial Daddy Magic ritual, they summoned, trapped, killed, and ate the dread cow Vacarys, a huge quasi-demon cow three times the size of a regular cow, and roasted him in the most epic barbeque known to man.

Henry, being a staunch lifelong vegan, objected to this plan of action, but even he couldn’t deny the potency of the Daddy Magic. Vacarys, upon being summoned, retaliated by Mind Blasting the group of gathered dads, stunning everyone except Henry. Henry then took the opportunity to give a one minute long lecture on the merits of veganism while he had the captive audience of the stunned dads.

So, when Henry thinks of the word “cow,” his mind would immediately go back to the ritual of summoning and killing Vacarys, and he would reflect on how even though he had to eat meat this one time, it was a sacrifice for a greater good: getting himself and his kids back home.

  • Door
Henry spent a good chunk of his adult life with the memories of his childhood locked behind a metaphorical “door” in his mind. It was his mind’s way of coping with the intense trauma of being physically yanked through an unstable dimensional portal that brought him from the Forgotten Realms to Earth. Only when he returned to Oakvale in search of his anchor did Henry confront this trauma, which held the key to unlocking his memories.

Upon hearing the word “door,” Henry would think back to the period of his life when he didn’t remember who he was and had to forge a new life for himself while knowing nothing but his own name. He would think about the way Mercedes and her family helped him by taking him in and teaching him about their world. He would think about the family he and Mercedes built together, and how he cared deeply about saving that family once the “door” inside his mind was opened. Henry doesn’t like to live life with regrets, and as traumatic as his amnesia was, he doesn't resent the loss of memory as much as someone might think he would. Living so many years with his memories locked away turned him into the man he is today.
